She added: I didn’t recognize myself it was so bizarre.’
It was at the point and for the first time in her life Patsy realised she wasn’t able to eat what she wanted.
She said: ‘Up until the age of 30 I could eat whatever I wanted I mean literally I never put on a pound, if anything I was criticised in the media for being too skinny.’
Over the next few years Patsy admitted to trying different diets and fitness techniques to try and shed the weight, but nothing worked.
She explained: ‘I spent the next two or three years training like an athlete cutting out this cutting out that, I so focused on getting the weight off.’
After losing a bit of weight Patsy found it would quickly go back on and she says she was ‘stuck in a circle’.
In 2004 Patsy joined Emmerdale and decided to go along to a WeightWatchers meeting with some of the cast members.
Speaking about the plan said: ‘My mother had done it in the 70s and it was a trusted diet, like an institution. I went along to the meetings and it just worked.
Patsy lost the three stone she had gained after having her second son but she admits she got ‘bored’ with the diet and saw her weight creep back up again until she returned to the diet in August last year.
The former Holby City star who is now a celebrity ambassador for the WeightWatchers cites not really paying attention to what she was eating and making bad food decisions part of the problem.
Patsy said: ‘I think that we can often be eating and not even really acknowledging that we are putting something about our mouths. I think there is lot to be said about eating dinner and not having the distraction of the TV.’
The actress admits she fell foul of the ‘toxic environment we are living in’ where food is readily available and pushed at you.
She added: ‘I think I was snacking badly and making bad choices.’

While other celebrities work out extensively to maintain their shape Patsy credits her slim shape to healthy eating thanks to the plan and a little bit of walking – she hasn’t seen a personal trainer in more than a year.
Patsy who has two sons James, 19, and Lennon, 13, from her marriages to Jim Kerr and Liam Gallagher but said the plan allows her to have dinner with her children without having to make a separate meal for herself.
She explained: ‘My boys eat they both have such healthy appetites. I will go and do food shops and the fridge is bursting and I will be like where did all that go. They are way more open to things than I was growing up.’
She added: ‘You can really make some delicious things it’s not like you have to make two different meals. ‘
